Haiti Food Systems Alliance

Haiti Food
System Alliance

We believe every Haitian should
be fed and Haitians can feed Haiti.

Our Mission

Our mission is to create fundamental and lasting economic change in the lives of rural farming families and communities in Haiti. Through increased collaboration, the Alliance seeks to create more inclusive, profitable, and sustainable food systems and value chains in Haiti.

Problem

There are one million smallholder farmers in Haiti. Despite decades of investments and countless foreign NGO programs, smallholder farmers are finding it harder and harder to survive, and many are leaving farming altogether to migrate to impoverished urban settlements or abroad. When farming families suffer – all of Haiti suffers. Compared to forty years ago, Haiti has more than double the mouths to feed and less domestic agricultural production to do it. Today, 60% of Haiti lives in poverty. 40% is chronically food insecure. Local production meets only 40% of national needs. Food systems and smallholder farmers in Haiti need help, now.

Solution

The Haiti Food Systems Alliance (HFSA) is a locally-led coalition that is transforming food systems from the ground up. We are a group of proven and diverse local partners that have been working together for years, and who represent and consist of hundreds of Haitian staff and workers, thousands of Haitian farmers, students and patients, and dozens of affiliated Haitian community organizations.

We are entering the next chapter as Haiti’s leading field catalyst for food systems, focusing on five main activities:

  • Coordinating Haiti’s food system actors to overcome fragmentation
  • Enhancing collaboration to centralize and share knowledge and reduce duplication of efforts
  • Unlocking financing to diversify funding sources and reduce dependence on grants
  • Increasing funding through innovative mechanisms that drive transparency, value for money and focus on outcomes.
  • Communicating to elevate positive narratives of Haiti, reshape perceptions and drive critical policy reforms.

Impact Spotlight

In May 2023, the HFSA held an Agro-Entrepreneur Competition to support the new generation of Haitian farmers, and in the next phase will expand opportunities for financing and new market integration opportunities.

Djimy Saintil

TRIPLE AGRO

Inspired by the impact of COVID-19 on the population of the Far North, particularly with the closure of Haitian-Dominican borders, Djimy Saintil and his peers, students of HFSA partner Quisqueya Agronomy Faculty, launched TRIPLE AGRO, an agricultural business intended to bring innovation to improve food sustainability in the region. Today, they produce six crops for domestic consumption, using improved seeds and a drip irrigation system, that have improved their yield and sustainability. Triple Agro received funding from the HFSA and is currently receiving a year of enterprise incubation from HFSA partner CLE, and sector-specific mentorship from HFSA Production Partners.

Jean Max Cange

FFH Entreprise Agricole

Jean Max CANGE launched FFH Entreprise Agricole in September 2020 to provide training in agriculture theory and practice to students (ages 12-14), helping them set up their own vegetable garden business. They create and manage school and orphanage gardens, using recycled materials and agro-ecology. They have invested in critical best practices such as drip irrigation to expand yields and reduce cost, an organic fertilizer from local waste. Currently working in 6 schools, the HFSA is supporting Jean Max Cange and his colleagues in expanding their business and operations to many more to ensure farming culture and education starts early, to ensure the viability of Haiti’s future food system.

Our Values

Sustainability
